Small court, big wins.

Following their impressive performances in the national scene, Iloilo’s rising athletics stars Franklin Catera and Kian Labar will banner the Philippine delegation in the upcoming 14th ASEAN School Games in Brunei Darussalam.

Both Catera and Labar concluded their Batang Pinoy 2025 stints with podium finishes. Catera, a pride of Tigbauan, Iloilo, earned his slot after shattering the Batang Pinoy high jump record with a soaring 2.04 meters—a feat that broke his own mark set last year in Palawan. The Ilonggo jumper has now delivered gold for three consecutive editions, making him one of the most consistent youth athletes in the country’s grassroots program.

Meanwhile, sprint sensation Kian Labar of Dingle, Iloilo continued to dominate the track after resetting multiple Batang Pinoy sprint records. Labar clocked a blistering 48.84 seconds in the 400-meter dash and previously broke the 100-meter mark with 10.82 seconds, solidifying his reputation as one of the fastest young runners in Philippine youth athletics.

Both athletes caught the attention of national selectors with their exceptional performances, earning them coveted spots in the Philippine team for the regional multi-sport event.

Coaches and athletics officials expressed confidence that the Ilonggo duo will deliver strong performances in Brunei. Their participation also highlights Iloilo’s growing reputation as a talent-rich province in athletics, fueled by dedicated grassroots development and support from local sports communities.
