After a weeklong battle of stamina and athletecism, two Ilonggo athletes sprinted their way into the national spotlight, shattering long-standing 2025 Batang Pinoy records in their respective events in General Santos City.

Proving that Iloilo continues to be a powerhouse of athletes, Franklin Catera of Tigbauan, Iloilo and Kian Labar of Dingle, Iloilo delivered stellar performances with a record breaking feat.

Catera, already a household name in local track and field, leapt to a new height of 2.04 meters in the boys’ high jump — breaking the very record he set last year. The pride of Tigbauan, now a three-time Batang Pinoy gold medalist, has made it a habit to raise the bar higher each year.

“Every jump is a challenge to outdo myself,” Catera said with a grin after clinching gold. “I’m proud to bring this home for Tigbauan and for Iloilo.”

Meanwhile, Dingle sprinter Labar made a blistering run in the 400-meter dash, clocking 48.84 seconds, to beat his previous record of 49.3 seconds. Known for his explosive speed and calm focus, the 17-year-old has become Iloilo’s sprint king.

Hailing from Barangay Ilajas, Labar’s journey from running barefoot on dusty roads to dominating the national stage is a story of perseverance and passion.

Mentored by coach Gerlie Daras during his elementary years and later trained by coach Dave at Dingle National High School, Labar has steadily climbed the ranks of Philippine athletics.

“I just give my best every time I run,” Labar said. “Breaking the record is a dream come true, but it’s only the beginning.”

Both Catera and Labar proved that Iloilo’s future in athletics looks brighter than ever. Both young champions not only brought home gold medals but also carried the pride and spirit of every Ilonggo.IMT Sports
