About 213 thousand dogs in the province of Iloilo have been vaccinated against rabies, according to the Provincial Veterenary Office (PVO).

The number constituted 58 percent of nearly 368 thousand dog population in the province.

Dr. Darel Tabuada, PVO head, thanked local government units (LGUs) and local communities for thier active uspport in the provincial government’s rabies prevention campaign.

He urged other dog owners to have their pets vaccinated against rabies to help eradicate the deadly disease in the province.

PVO as well as Municipal and City Veterenary Offices have been conducting free house-to-house anti-rabies vaccination.

Rabies is a “viral infection that can be transmitted to humans through animal bites or even scratches, most commonly by dogs.”

Initial symptoms oinclude fever, weakness, and swelling of the wound, usually appear two to three months after exposure.

However, they can also manifest within weeks or take up to a year and could lead to fear of water and air, confusion, and paralysis, depending on the amount of virus that enters the human body as well as the location of the exposure.IMT
