A half-century of faith and tradition culminated on Good Friday, April 3, as the town of Barotac Viejo in Iloilo staged its 50th Taltal, one of the most enduring and realistic Lenten reenactments in Western Visayas.

The religious spectacle, which portrays the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, drew a large crowd of devout pilgrims, curious tourists, and local residents.

Since its inception in 1976, Taltal has become a cornerstone of Iloilo’s religious heritage, renowned for its visceral depiction of the Way of the Cross.

During the reenactment, actors carrying heavy wooden crosses navigated the town’s main thoroughfares, followed by a somber procession that led to a designated hilltop for the climactic crucifixion scene.

Mayor Nielo Tupas characterized this year’s golden anniversary as extra special noting that the local government dedicated months of preparation to ensure the success of the event.

“We are profoundly grateful to the cast members and supporters, both from 50 years ago and those with us today,” he said.

“Their commitment has allowed us to innovate and reach this 50-year milestone. For me, the most significant achievement is how this event continues to showcase the unwavering faith of the people of Barotac Viejo,” Tupas continued.

The milestone event concluded not just as a theatrical success, but as a renewed vow of devotion for a community that has kept the tradition alive for five decades.IMT
