President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has emphasized the government’s expanded efforts to build dams and flood control projects to address climate change, ensure water supply, and meet energy needs.
Speaking at the Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas rally in Batangas City over the weekend, Marcos Jr. noted that six typhoons hit the country between October and December last year—a record that underscores the urgent need for climate adaptation.
“Panay ang patayo po natin ng mga dam. Panay po ang patayo natin ng mga flood control project dahil nagbabago po ang panahon. Kailangan nating pagandahin ang ating flood control,” he said.
The President also cited the impact of last year’s El Niño on food production and stressed the importance of preparing for future droughts.
“Handa na po tayo kahit mangyari po ulit ‘yun ay nakahanda na rin po tayo dahil tiningnan po natin ang pagkukulang namin noong nakaraang El Niño,” according to him.
In addition to flood prevention, Marcos Jr. said new dams are being built to store water for household use and irrigation, and to generate power for growing residential and industrial demand.
He also highlighted the completion of the “One Grid” power network last year, which now connects Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
“Dati putol ‘yan sa Mindanao, putol ‘yan sa Negros, putol ‘yan sa Luzon. Ngayon, may koneksyon na ‘yun at makikita natin nagiging mas maganda ang sitwasyon natin sa kuryente.”IMT
