President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. hailed Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao’s return to the boxing ring as a powerful symbol of Filipino strength and unity.
Pacquiao, 46, fought reigning WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios, 30, to a hard-earned majority draw at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. One judge scored it 115–113 for Barrios, while two had it even at 114–114, allowing the American to retain his title.
Before departing for an official visit to the U.S., Marcos Jr. expressed his support on social media, calling it “a moment to witness the heart of a champion and the strength of a nation.”
He added, “The Philippines holds its breath as we come together once more, united behind the People’s Champ.”
Despite a nearly four-year hiatus and a 16-year age gap, Pacquiao impressed fans with his trademark speed, footwork, and grit. Barrios praised his opponent, saying, “It was an honor to share the ring with him. His stamina at 46 caught me off guard.”
Pacquiao retired in 2021 to focus on public service, serving as senator from 2016 to 2022. He ran unsuccessfully for president in 2022 and lost again in the May 2025 senatorial elections.IMT Sports
