President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has signed Republic Act No. 12232, postponing the December 2025 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) to the first Monday of November 2026. Future BSKEs will be held every four years.
The law sets a four-year term for all elected barangay and SK officials, limits barangay officials to three consecutive terms, and allows SK officials only one term in the same position.
Incumbents will remain in office until successors are elected, but barangay officials already on their third term cannot run in 2026.
Marcos Jr. said the postponement will let the Commission on Elections focus on the first Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) parliamentary elections in October 2025, calling it a historic vote crucial to the Mindanao peace process.
He warned that failure of the BARMM polls would be a major setback.
The Comelec has 90 days from the law’s effectivity to issue implementing rules.IMT
