President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has urged Singapore to invest more in the Philippines’ renewable energy sector, as part of efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation. He made the appeal during a meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in Malacañang on Wednesday.

“I encouraged Singapore to increase its investments in the renewable energy sector as part of our forward-looking bilateral agenda,” Marcos said at a joint press conference.

Wong, on his first official visit to the Philippines from June 4 to 5, said Singaporean firms are interested in solar and wind projects in the country.

“Such projects can generate economic opportunities for the Philippines while supporting the Philippines’ renewable energy targets,” he said.

Both leaders agreed to step up cooperation in clean energy and support the ASEAN Power Grid initiative.

They also committed to speeding up talks on a carbon credits mechanism aligned with Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement.

Marcos Jr. said completing these negotiations early could bring in more climate-friendly investments and generate sustainable jobs for Filipinos and Singaporeans alike.

The leaders also discussed strengthening people-to-people ties. Wong expressed appreciation for the Filipino community in Singapore, especially healthcare workers who supported the country during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said both countries are exploring a broader healthcare partnership and expanding cooperation in human resource development, particularly in digitalization.

Wong also pledged Singapore’s full support for the Philippines’ chairmanship of ASEAN in 2026.IMT
