The Iloilo City Government has ordered the closure of three computer shops in Barangay Airport, Mandurriao for operating without the necessary permits and for allegedly violating the city’s curfew ordinance for minors.

Closed establishments included Charbert Computer Shop, Jays Computer Shop, and Charlyn Computer Shop, all located in Zone 1 of the barangay.

Nestor Canong, head of the Task Force on Morals and Values Formation (TFMVF), said authorities are intensifying monitoring operations on computer shops in coordination with the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) following reports that some minors are allegedly being used in the sale and distribution of illegal drugs in the city.

Canong said the crackdown forms part of the city government’s broader effort to protect minors and enforce local ordinances, especially during the school break when more children are frequenting computer shops and internet cafés.

He also echoed Mayor Raisa Treñas’ call for parents to closely monitor the activities and whereabouts of their children while classes are suspended.

Under Regulation Ordinance No. 2011-676, minors are prohibited from loitering outside their homes from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., unless accompanied by parents or guardians or for other valid reasons.IMT

The United States remains firmly committed to its 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty with the Philippines, as trilateral cooperation with Japan expands to address rising security and economic challenges in the Indo-Pacific.

US Embassy in the Philippines Chargé d’Affaires Robert Ewing addressed members of the U.S.-Philippines Society and highlighted what he described as a “historic chapter” in trilateral relations among the Philippines, the United States, and Japan over the past year.

Ewing underscored Washington’s “ironclad” commitment to Philippine security under the Mutual Defense Treaty, stressing that Philippine concerns are U.S. concerns, particularly amid what he called China’s increasing aggression in the South China Sea.

“For 75 years, this alliance has only grown stronger,” Ewing said, emphasizing that credible deterrence remains a shared responsibility among allies committed to a free and secure Indo-Pacific.

Expanding military and maritime cooperation

Ewing cited strengthened defense cooperation during the 2025 ASEAN Ministerial Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, where Philippine, Japanese, and U.S. officials reaffirmed support for regional peace, stability, and freedom of navigation.

He pointed to expanding joint exercises, including a trilateral Coast Guard drill near Kagoshima involving 350 personnel responding to high-seas emergencies, as well as Balikatan 2025, which welcomed Japan as a participant.

He noted that joint interoperability continues to improve as these exercises grow in sophistication and scope.

Luzon economic corridor launched

Ewing stressed that economic security is as vital to trilateral cooperation as defense. The first Indo-Pacific business corridor within the G7 Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment, the Luzon business Corridor, was launched by the three nations in April 2024. In order to improve connection and promote job growth, the program focuses on digital infrastructure, energy, and transportation.

He cited the U.S.-backed Subic-Clark-Manila-Batangas freight railway and Japan’s North-South Commuter Railway as projects designed to strengthen supply chains and attract private investment.

“The Philippines’ economic growth is essential to a free and secure Indo-PacAdvancing Innovation, Energy, and TechnologyEneThe trilateral agenda also highlights technology cooperation. Ewing pointed to the opening of the University of the Philippines’ Open Radio Access Network Laboratory, developed with Japan to support secure telecommunications infrastructure.ations infrastructure.

The United States is also enhancing cyber defense capabilities and supporting workforce development for the Philippines’ civil nuclear program to address evolving cyber threats.

Ewing said sustaining momentum will require private sector investment, and expressed optimism about growth in liquefied natural gas, digital infrastructure, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and other key sectors.

“Collaborative, Aligned Action”Ewing concluded that trilateral cooperation is strong, results-driven, and positioned for even greater achievements.on.

“Our coordinated, group efforts are having a significant effect,” he stated. “We are still dedicated to fostering technological advancement, increasing interoperability, luring investment, and strengthening maritime cooperation.”

“The United States welcomes new partners who share our commitment to a safe and prosperous Indo-Pacific region,” he continued.

A small island community in Concepcion, Iloilo is now harnessing wind energy for power and disaster preparedness, following the installation of a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) system under the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) Project DAGAT.

Barangay Botlog is among the three island communities in Western Visayas selected for the pilot initiative, formally known as Driving Advancement, Generating Access, and Transforming Small Island Communities.

DOST-6 Regional Director Engr. Rowen Gelonga said the project aims to introduce targeted technological interventions that strengthen disaster resilience and energy security in isolated island barangays.

“For every island community, we pilot a different technology based on their needs,” Gelonga said. “In Barangay Botlog, we focused on wind energy to provide an additional and reliable source of electricity.”

The VAWT system captures wind energy to power lighting and charging facilities in the community, reducing dependence on conventional electricity sources and improving resilience during emergencies.

Under the pilot setup, electricity generated by the turbine will be used to light up shoreline areas through streetlights and supply power at the barangay hall, where residents can charge mobile phones and small appliances.

The streetlights were provided by the local government unit, while the turbine system was installed through the DOST project.

The wind turbine has a capacity of one kilowatt, which Gelonga said is enough to power more than 200 light bulbs.

The system is currently undergoing a dry run to test its technical specifications and performance before any expansion of its use.

“If everything performs well, we can explore broader applications of the generated electricity,” Gelonga said.

To complement wind power during periods of weak airflow, the system also includes auxiliary solar panels for daytime energy generation.

Beyond power generation, the project includes the installation of an automated weather station in the barangay.

Residents were trained to understand weather parameters and equipped with basic disaster risk reduction knowledge to help them prepare for extreme weather events.

The project was officially unveiled during a ceremony in Barangay Botlog on Dec. 19.

Project DAGAT is a collaborative effort involving the DOST, Central Philippine University (CPU), and Northern Iloilo State University, with funding support from the Department of Economy, Planning and Development through its Innovation Grant program.

Gelonga noted that data generated from the Botlog pilot will be used to further refine wind turbine designs and improve efficiency.

He added that CPU established a wind energy research center three years ago, where components of the turbine system were tested.

Aside from Botlog, two other island communities are part of the program. In Unisan Island, Nueva Valencia, Guimaras, the project is nearing completion and focuses on a water desalination facility in partnership with John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University.

Meanwhile, in Mararison Island in Culasi, Antique, the initiative centers on disaster preparedness, including the installation of an automated weather station and training on evacuation mapping, first aid, and emergency response.

“The goal is to tailor solutions that respond to the actual needs of island communities,” Gelonga said, adding that the technologies are meant to help residents become more self-reliant and disaster-ready.IMT

Persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the Iloilo City District Jail–Male Dormitory (ICDJ-MD) in Barangay Ungka, Jaro are planning to once again take part in the Dinagyang Festival next year through a special participation arrangement.

Jail Superintendent Denver Beltran, warden of the ICDJ-MD, said the group, known as Tribu Paghilom, intends to showcase another performance as part of the iconic festival, following their previous participation that drew public attention.

The official explained that the performance will be staged inside the jail facility, with the presentation shown to festival audiences through live feed or recorded video displayed on screens at designated venues, in line with security protocols.

“All performances will be done within the jail premises, but the public will still be able to watch through monitors,” Beltran said, noting that the participation is considered a special entry rather than part of the official competition.

He added that all props, costumes, and materials to be used by the PDL performers are being sourced from their own resources, with support from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP).

According to Beltran, the initiative came from the PDLs themselves, who expressed a strong desire to return to the Dinagyang stage as a way of showcasing their talents and personal growth despite being behind bars.

The warden emphasized that the participation goes beyond cultural expression, describing it as part of the jail’s rehabilitation and reformation programs.

“This is not just about performance. It is a form of rehabilitation and a way for them to express discipline, creativity, and hope,” he said.

The planned return of Tribu Paghilom underscores how culture and the arts continue to serve as powerful tools for transformation, offering persons deprived of liberty a platform for dignity, self-worth, and second chances—even within correctional facilities.IMT

The Iloilo City Council has unanimously approved a resolution urging Mayor Raisa Treñas to erect a monument honoring the late Ilongga senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago.

Councilor Rex Marcus Sarabia sponsored the measure during the council’s regular session on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, describing it as a “people-initiated resolution” to formally recognize Santiago’s enduring legacy.

Iloilo City Councilor Rex Sarabia

The resolution cited Santiago’s reputation as the “Iron Lady of Asia,” who earned national and international acclaim for her brilliance, courage, and integrity. It highlighted her distinguished career across all three branches of government—serving as a regional trial court judge, commissioner of immigration and deportation, and senator.

Santiago also made history as the first Filipino and Asian from a developing country to be elected as judge of the International Criminal Court.

“Her unwavering dedication to good governance, rule of law, education and public accountability continues to inspire generations of Filipinos, particularly the youth who remember her sharp wit, wisdom, and unmatched courage,” the resolution stated.

The council further underscored that Santiago’s life and achievements remain a source of pride for Iloilo, especially for residents of La Paz district, where she spent her formative years.

Sarabia added that at a time when controversies hound national flood control projects, Santiago’s legacy serves as a reminder for leaders to fight corruption and stand for what is right.IMT

Kanlaon Volcano erupted again early Tuesday morning, May 13, blasting a thick ash plume and fiery debris into the sky, Phivolcs reported.

The five-minute “moderately explosive” eruption began at 2:55 a.m., sending a gray plume 3 kilometers high above the crater.

Ashfall was reported in parts of Negros Occidental, including La Carlota City (Cubay, San Miguel, Yubo, Ara-al), Bago City (Ilijan, Binubuhan), and La Castellana (Biak-na-Bato, Sag-ang, Mansalanao).

Rumbling sounds were heard in Barangay Pula, Canlaon City and in La Castellana.

Phivolcs said hot, fast-moving pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) flowed down the southern slope within 2 km of the crater. These are deadly clouds of gas and volcanic debris.

“Large ballistic fragments were also observed to have been thrown around the crater within a few hundred meters and caused burning of vegetation near the volcano summit,” Phivolcs added.

Kanlaon remains under Alert Level 3, meaning the volcano is in a state of magmatic unrest. More sudden and dangerous eruptions could happen anytime.

Phivolcs urged residents within the 6-km danger zone to stay evacuated due to the risk of PDCs, ashfall, rockfall, and flying debris.

People in ash-hit areas should wear masks or use wet cloths to avoid inhaling fine ash, especially those with health conditions, the elderly, pregnant women, and children.

Local officials are advised to stay ready for possible evacuations if volcanic activity worsens.

Heavy rains could trigger dangerous volcanic mudflows (lahars) along streams near the volcano, Phivolcs warned. Pilots are also advised to steer clear of the summit, as ash can damage aircraft engines.IMT

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH-6) encouraged the public to “move forward” from the Ungka flyover fiasco.

Instead of identifying those responsible for the defective flyover, DPWH-6 director Sonny Boy Oropel said they focus on fixing the defective flyover.

Based on the geotechnical investigation of the DPWH third-party consultant, all 16 piers of the four-lane flyover suffered vertical displacement.

“Ang akon lang ya is to move forward kon ano pwede naton mabulig para magamit na naton in full capacity ang Ungka flyover,” he said in a press conference.

The flyover, which is currently undergoing repairs, is targeted to be fully operational by December this year.

“The DPWH is not looking for any…wala kita nagapangita sang accountable person. Kay sa nasiling ko na, in the first place, the people in the regional office before my assumption just only implement projects according to plans,” Oropel stressed.

The construction of the controversial flyover was completed in August 2022 when the DPWH-6 was still headed by Tiburcio DL Canlas as regional director. The following month, Canlas was succeeded by Nerie Bueno. Oropel was appointed to the post in 2023, replacing Bueno.

From its original budget of P680 million, the cost of 453.7-meter flyover ballooned to nearly P1 billion due to repairs.
