Another Negrense spiker is making a name in the national arena as she steered the University of Santo Tomas Junior Golden Tigresses to claim the PNVF U-18 Girls Championships at the expense of the Nazareth School of National University Lady Bullpups, 25-17, 17-25, 25-20, 25-23 at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Playing like a well-oiled machine, Kimberly Chelmei Ibanez Rubin spearheaded the offense of the winning squad after amassing 24 points built on 18 attacks and six service aces.

The native of La Carlota City, Negros Occidental was hailed Player of the Game during the scintillating finals clash.

It was a hard-earned victory for the Lady Bullpups, especially in the second set and in the fourth set, where they crawled back from an early deficit to clinch the championship.

“Thankful kami kahit na nahirapan kami talaga, pero nandun ‘yung pagco-compose namin sa isa’t-isa, pagtutulungan po, and gumagaling din kami sa sistema na meron kami,” Rubin said.

Rubin, who was named as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and Best Outside Hitter, added that she has slowly adapted to the system of UST head coach Emilio “Kung Fu” Reyes.

Rubin, a former standout of Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts and Our Lady of Pilar Academy also said that it was a remarkable campaign for the Junior Golden Tigresses as they swept their four group stage matches before beating the Canossa Academy in the quarterfinals and the Kings’ Montessori School in the semifinals.

The Kings’ Montessori School, meanwhile, defeated De La Salle-Lipa, 25-19, 25-18, 25-14, to capture the bronze medal finish in the women’s division.IMT Sports

Continuing their solid forms on the field, Kaya Futbol Club-Iloilo made an empathic performance in the Philippines Football League as they defeated Maharlika Taguig Football Club, 10-1, at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

Leading the assault for the Ilonggos, Shuto Komaki tallied a hat trick to lead the way while Jarvey Gayoso and Ilonggo Jesus Melliza had two goals each. Marco Casambre, Audie Menzi, and Eric Esso also chipped in one conversion each.

Both teams started the game with veteran booters. Series of attempts were made but Gayoso opened the goal fest for Iloilo City, following a fifth-minute connection before the lead was double with Melliza’s first goal of the contest in the 18th minute.

Answering the great rally of their foes, Maharlika Taguig pulled one back as Lucas del Rosario slotted one on the upper left corner, but Kaya-Iloilo immediately regained the two-goal advantage with Komaki’s 21st-minute hit.

Komaki then knocked in his second goal of the game in the 41st minute before Gayoso and Komaki converted just before the halftime break to make it a 6-1 advantage for Kaya-Iloilo.

In the second half, Melliza opened the scoring spree for Kaya-Iloilo in the 47th minute, before Casambre and Menzi added two more in the 55th and 59th minutes and then Esso capped the goal fest with his 77th minute connection.

With the win, Kaya-Iloilo will attempt to secure their fourth consecutive win in the tournament as they battle One Taguig FC while Maharlika Taguig will try to cause an upset against another contender in DH Cebu FC.IMT Sports

Displaying great athleticism on the field, Kaya Futbol Club – Iloilo easily hammered Don Bosco Garelli FC, 12-0, in the 2024 Philippines Football League at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

Stepping up his game, Jarvey Gayoso converted four goals which steered his team to win the match. The Philippine Azkals mainstay converted in the eighth, 67th, 86th, 90+2 minutes, giving Iloilo City-based booters the top spot with six points and with a +14 goal difference.

Kaishu Yamazaki, Shuto Komaki, Ilonggo Jan Jesus Melliza, and Robert Lopez Mendy also contributed two goals apiece for Kaya-Iloilo, which equaled the second highest scoring margin in PFL history.

For Gayoso, he is very satisfied with the team’s performance. I understand you have appointed one (Man of the Match) but the scoreline reflects the overall performance and effort of the team. They all deserve to be acknowledged,” he added.

Pinoy boxer Eumir Marcial fortifies his campaign to the 2024 Paris Olympics stint after knocking down Thai fighter Thoedsak Sinam on Saturday night, March 23, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.

Despite being qualified in the 2024 Olympics, Marcial showed an empathic performance through flurry of punches midway through the fourth round with a devastating left uppercut to Sinam’s chin, sending the latter to the canvas.

Sinam failed to recover from the eight-count which halted the contest at the 1:33 mark of round four to maintain the undefeated professional boxing record of the Zamboanga City-native Marcial.

The 28-year-old Marcial improved his flawless record to 5-0-0 win-loss-draw ring record with 3 knockouts while Sinam dropped to 23-14-0 with 19 stoppage wins.

On the other hand, Ilonggo fighter Jules Victoriano (13-7-0, 10 KOs) sustained a 77-74, 77-74, 78-73 unanimous decision defeat to Pepito Masangkay (6-1-0, 5 KOs) in one of the undercard bouts.

The native of Iloilo City was unable to keep in step with the volume punching of Masangkay, who solidified his victory with a massive left hit to knock down his opponent.

Michael Orano (1-2-1), who also traced his roots from Iloilo City, sustained a split decision defeat to Jesus Magdayo (2-0-0, 1 KO) in a tightly-contested four-round encounter.

Orano, fighting for the Elorde Fight Team in Paranaque, got a 39-37 score from judge Don Arguelles but judges Gil Co and Greg Ortega gave an identical 39-37 score for Magdayo.IMT Sports
