Boracay visitors and tourists are told to be wary of dealing with travel agencies and agents who are not Department of Tourism’s (DOT) accredited, especially those transacting online.

The local government unit of Malay, Aklan through its Municipal Tourism Office (MTO), released an advisory calling on would-be visitors and tourists bound for Boracay Island to have their travel arrangements only through the DOT-accredited travel agencies and accommodation establishments in Boracay Island and in Mainland Malay.

Chief Tourism Operations Officer of Malay Felix Delos Santos, Jr. said these agencies have been vetted and approved by the LGU and the DOT, providing a higher level of reliability and security for travel necessities.

“I sincerely believe that our office is really doing its best to provide our tourists a safe and comfortable vacation, and so I hope that the tourists will also be responsible enough to exercise extreme caution in every travel transaction they do online,” Delos Santos said.

LGU Malay issued an advisory on the list of trusted DOT-Accredited Travel Agencies and Accommodation establishments referring to the official Facebook page Malay-Boracay Tourism Office as well as recommending to visit the website www.boracayinfoguide.com or Project Big A, for reliable information in planning trips to Boracay safely.

Project BIG-A is a one-stop, all-in-one mobile application with all the authentic, relevant and timely information necessary to travel to Boracay Island that is accessible anytime and anywhere.

The website also offers essential tips, travel guidelines, and insights about the island to ensure that the tourists will have a delightful and trouble-free experience.

The MTO further reminded tourists and visitors planning to go to Boracay to beware of suspicious emails, social media accounts, or websites claiming to offer travel deals that seem too good to be true.

“Tourists should always verify the authenticity of the sources by relying on DOT-accredited travel agencies and

accommodation establishments and remember to prioritize secure payment methods when making reservations,” Delos Santos added.

Meanwhile, to further protect would-be tourists and visitors bound for Boracay Island from fake travel agencies, the local tourism office announced that currently, there is only one travel and tour operator association exclusively recognized by the LGU – the Boracay Island Travel Agency and Tour Operators Association (BITATOA).

According to Claribel Casimero, BITATOA president, the group is the sole association officially recognized by the LGU-Malay as the governing body for travel agencies and tour operators operating within the municipality of Malay.

BITATOA was established on August 13, 2014 and boasts a total membership of forty reputable entities, all of which are accredited by the DOT.

“This exclusive recognition highlights BITATOA’s dedication to upholding high standards of service and adherence to local regulations,” Casimero said.

She assured that BITATOA, along with its accredited members, is committed to providing the tourists with exceptional service and memorable experiences during their stay in Boracay.

“With our collective efforts, we can ensure that every visitor enjoys a safe, enjoyable, and respectful visit to this paradise island,” Casimero added.

Based on the records of DOT-Boracay, there are 35 DOT-accredited travel and tour agencies in Boracay Island, while Mainland Malay, mostly in Barangay Caticlan, has 14.EAD-AGP/VGV/PIA Aklan

Boracay Island has already hit the 1-million mark in tourist arrivals in the first semester of 2023 and is optimistic that it can exceed the 1.8 million target for this year.

“We meet the one million mark and we are not expecting that much because the target was 1.8 million. If this will be the trend, we will exceed two million at the end of the year,” Mayor Frolibar Bautista said in an interview.

Data showed that from January to June 17, the island recorded 1,040,847 arrivals consisting of 199,098 foreign visitors; 816,426 local tourists and 25,323 overseas Filipino workers.

For the same period last year, around 850,047 guests visited the island.

Bautista attributed the high arrivals to their hosting of meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibits (MICE).

He said that from the 20 percent share of foreign tourists, they expect it to increase to 30 percent once visitors from South Korea and China start coming in next month.

Malay chief tourism operations officer Felix G. delos Santos Jr. said that most of their pre-pandemic guests were from the international market.

But with only one direct flight coming in from China and Korea, their record showed higher domestic guests.

Most of their foreign guests are Koreans, Chinese, Americans and those from countries in Europe, Delos Santos said.

He said that in terms of arrivals, their tourism industry is now 80 percent recovered and the resumption of direct international flights is one factor to achieve the 100 percent recovery rate.

Delos Santos said currently, they have 376 operational accommodation establishments, which is lower than the 398 before the pandemic.

Bautista said they have not imposed new protocols for guests visiting the island and even wearing of face mask is optional.PNA

The public is urged to help prevent the entry of African swine fever (ASF) and know its detrimental effect to the industry in Western Visayas following the apprehension of 74 boxes of undocumented pork products and eight cartons of ham bound for Capiz, Iloilo and Bacolod at the Jetty Port in Caticlan, Aklan during a routine inspection.

“While it is the tradition of Filipinos to prepare ham during Christmas and New Year, we have to consider the risk that it will cause because we still have a continuing battle against ASF,” Bureau of Animal Industry-Veterinary Quarantine Station Aklan provincial coordinator Dr. Wendel Maglantay said in an interview on Thursday, Dec. 22.

The pork products, including undocumented and unlabeled ham, estimated to be worth close to PHP2 million was apprehended on Dec. 17.

Maglantay said that apprehended shipments can be returned to the sending entity within 24 hours, otherwise, it will be considered abandoned and be subjected to proper disposal.

The province’s General Ordinance 2011-011 that governs the prevention and control of the ASF in the province, bans the entry of all pork and pork-based products to the province, whether labeled or unlabeled, if they came from areas with cases of the animal disease.

In Oct. 14 this year, the provincial government issued Executive Order No. 45 reiterating the prohibition following the confirmation of ASF cases in Iloilo.

Maglantay said a 24-hour monitoring is continuously being conducted at the Caticlan and Kalibo airports and at the busy port in Caticlan.

Vessels coming from Manila and Mindoro passes by the Caticlan Jetty Port as their port of entry in going to various areas in Western Visayas.

In a separate interview, Aklan veterinarian Dr. Joseph Lachica said they are very strict with the conduct of border control since they are not only guarding against the entrance of ASF but also avian influenza.

“We are now regulating pork and chicken, especially that there are now cases of bird flu in Capiz. Executive Order No. 056, series of 22, now prohibits live birds coming from Luzon and Capiz, except for eggs and meat products. For ASF, Aklan has banned all live and pork products from other provinces in Panay Island,” he said.

The border control is situated at the airport and jetty port while a random check is being conducted in other ports that served as berthing areas of motorized bancas.

Aklan currently remains free from the ASF.PNA

The Department of Tourism (DOT) hails the inclusion of Boracay Island among TIME’s 50 extraordinary destinations to explore in 2022.

“The DOT affirms its pride and honor as Boracay Island once again proved its allure as a tourist haven. Such recognition will surely help us attain our goal of regaining our position in the global market,” Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco said in a news release.

“Surely, the Philippines has a multitude of sites and tourism activities that we could offer to the world. And, in addition to natural resources, we look forward as well to developing and promoting the talents of our people and the products that have potential for national and global marketability,” she added.

Boracay Island joins other world-famous destinations and natural wonders on the list, including the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, Seoul in South Korea, and Doha in Qatar, among others.

In 2018, a six-month closure of the island was imposed by the previous administration to make way for rehabilitation and redevelopment initiatives.

“Then the pandemic struck, and the Philippines closed its borders, halting even domestic tourism to Boracay. It took a severe toll on the local economy, but the silver lining was that this 4-sq.-mi. speck in the Visayas island chain had proper time to truly recover. As of February 2022, international visitors can finally revel in this revamped, recuperated, natural playground after what was effectively a three-year convalescence. Locals report the return of flora and fauna, like sea turtles, and hospitality has come back just as spectacularly,” wrote Charlie Campbell of TIME.

“Through collaboration between the DOT central and regional offices, relevant national government agencies, the local government units, and the private sector, we will exert all efforts to put in the limelight not only the country’s premier tourist destinations like Boracay, but also other places of interest in the country which may not have been given equal focus and attention in the past,” Secretary Frasco said.

In coming up with its list of 50 World’s Greatest Places for 2022, TIME solicited nominations from its international network of correspondents and contributors, putting focus on places “those offering new and exciting experiences.”
