Liga ng mga Barangay President and Ex-officio Board Member Amalia Debuque has welcomed the newly signed law extending the term of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials.

The original three-year term, according to Debuque, was never enough for grassroots leaders to turn plans into real results.

“This extension is a chance for barangay leaders to prove the sincerity of our service,” she said.

Signed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Republic Act No. 12232 lengthens village and SK officials’ term from the current three years to four years.

The law also moves the Barangay and SK Elections (BSKE) from December 1, 2025 to the first of Monday of November 2026.

Debuque described the move as a “vote of confidence” from Malacañang, granting barangay leaders the time and stability they need to implement meaningful reforms.

“The President’s decision shows trust in local leaders. This should push us to deliver stronger grassroots governance,” she added.IMT
