The 2026 Dinagyang Festival officially opened with the “Pamukaw” ritual, setting the stage for Ilonggos to welcome the holiday season and prepare for the city’s grand festival celebration in January.
Joyce Clavecillas, executive director of the Iloilo Festivals Foundation Inc. (IFFI), explained that the Pamukaw, traditionally held in the early morning, literally awakens the community, reminding residents that the heart of the celebration is the Child Jesus and the feast of Señor Santo Niño.
“For us, it is significant to celebrate the Pamukaw as a reminder that the center of this festivity is the Child Jesus,” she said.
The morning activity featured seven contingents of the Tribes Competition, performing within the vicinity of Plaza Libertad, giving locals and early visitors a glimpse of the energy and pageantry to come.
Clavecillas also shared plans for two opening salvoes next year. On January 10, the city will hold the salvo for the Kasadyahan Festival, showcasing performances from various towns across Iloilo, while the January 11 salvo will highlight Ilonggo pride and heritage.
During these opening salvoes, the performers will follow the Freedom to Sports Complex route, starting at the Freedom Memorial and proceeding to the Iloilo Sports Complex. This will allow festival contingents to familiarize themselves with the parade route ahead of the main competitions.
The Kasadyahan Festival competition proper is set for afternoon of January 24, while the Tribes Competition will take place on the morning of January 25.
Clavecillas also confirmed that ticket sales will soon be available online, with announcements and booking links to be posted once approved by their web developer.
“With this opening, Ilonggos are already gearing up for a season of faith, culture, and celebration,” she said.IMT
