The Department of Tourism (DOT) announced on Wednesday, April 9, that tourism activities near Mt. Kanlaon in Negros Occidental have been suspended for public safety following the volcano’s explosive eruption on April 8.
In an advisory, the DOT said it is working closely with local government units (LGUs) to ensure the safety of residents and tourists by monitoring the situation and responding swiftly.
“All tourism activities near Mt. Kanlaon, including treks and visits to nearby destinations such as La Carlota City, Bago City, La Castellana, and other surrounding areas in Negros Occidental, have been temporarily suspended,” it stated.
Other areas, including parts of Guimaras, Iloilo, and Antique, are also experiencing ashfall.
The DOT urged tourists to postpone travel plans to these areas and follow local safety measures. It also advised the public to stay alert and follow official advisories as the volcanic unrest continues.
Despite the disruptions, the department assured that all tourist accommodations and infrastructure in the affected areas remain structurally sound. No tourists have been stranded, and Mt. Kanlaon is currently at Alert Level 3.IMT
