Nearly 12,000 power consumers in the city’s Arevalo district can now expect improved service and fewer scheduled power interruptions following the energization of the 10/12 megavolt-amperes (MVA) Arevalo mobile substation (AMS) on Friday, June 20.
Engineer Armil Logarta, Assistant Vice President for Project Development and Management of More Electric and Power Corporation (MORE Power), said the newly energized substation will enhance power quality in Arevalo, which sits at the far end of the company’s distribution network.
“This is to address low voltage issues and deloading of Molo and Megaworld substations, giving them breathing room to accommodate additional demand,” Logarta said during a press conference.
MORE Power chief operating officer, engineer Joe-Mel Zaporteza, said the substation is equipped with a state-of-the-art Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, fully integrated with the diversion control system.
“This is the capability of distribution utilities to control this equipment from our system control. So there is a faster response,” he said.
The AMS is only temporary because the power firm will establish a bigger substation with a 30/36 MVA capacity to cater to the potential increased demand due to the opening of Sunset Boulevard.
In addition to the Arevalo substation, the company is also eyeing new substations in General Hughes and Banuyao, along with the rehabilitation of the existing La Paz substation.
“I have mentioned that in the last five years, we spent close to PHP2.5 billion, and actually, for the next five years, we are again committing another PHP2 billion just for Iloilo City alone to further our capacity,” Zaporteza said.
He also assured there were no adjustments in the distribution charge since the movement was mostly due to generation.PNA
