The Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) has recommended to the Office of the Ombudsman the filing of plunder and graft charges against Uswag Ilonggo Party-list Representative James “Jojo” Ang Jr. and seven other “cong-tractors.”
According to ICI chairperson Andres Reyes Jr., the eight lawmakers — including resigned Ako Bicol Party-list Represenative Zaldy Co — own or are linked to contracting firms that bagged billions of pesos worth of flood control projects from 2016 to 2024.
“Members of Congress are barred from having a financial interest, directly or indirectly, in any government contract, franchise, or special privilege during their term of office,” Reyes said in a statement.
“These congressmen should not be engaging in private business activities that conflict with their official duties. They should not influence bids and awards. Members of Congress must not sway procurement processes, nor should they participate in or benefit from government contracts,” he added.
ICI tagged Ang as having been connected to International Builders Corporation (IBC) and Allencon Development Corporation.
In an official statement the lawmaker from Iloilo said his “conscience is clear” and he is confident that he would be able to clear his name soon.
“In my three years in public service, I have never used my position in the government for my own interest and to profit in any way,” Ang stressed.
“I hold the trust of the Ilonggos strongly, and will never betray the faith of my kasimanwas in me as their representative in Uswag Ilonggo Party-list since 2022,” he continued.
Ang said he is ready to face the charges in the proper forum.IMT
