The Iloilo Bulk Water Supply Project, a proposed collaborative initiative between Aboitiz InfraCapital, Inc. (AIC), the infrastructure arm of the Aboitiz Group, and the Iloilo City Government, is set to significantly bolster the city’s water infrastructure by fueling additional investments in the city.

With an investment of ₱5.12 billion, the project aims to deliver up to 80 million liters per day of potable water, ensuring a reliable and sustainable water supply for Iloilo City’s growing population, including a wide range of socio-economic drivers.

But beyond infrastructure, the Iloilo Bulk Water Supply Project is poised to generate substantial local employment opportunities in Iloilo City.

“This project is more than just a water supply initiative that will secure and strengthen the city’s long-term water resilience – it is a catalyst for sustainable growth in Iloilo City. The Iloilo Bulk Water Supply Project represents a critical investment in Iloilo City’s water infrastructure, creating jobs and supporting economic growth that will benefit all Ilonggos,” said AIC President & Chief Executive Officer Cosette V. Canilao.

During the proposed project’s construction phase, numerous jobs will be created, ranging from skilled labor to technical and administrative positions. This influx of employment is expected to provide meaningful livelihoods for Ilonggos, contributing to the local economy and fostering community development.

Meanwhile, observers note that the Iloilo Bulk Water Supply Project also introduces a much-needed diversification in water service provision, moving away from a single-player model that has historically limited infrastructure investments.

By incorporating multiple players into the city’s water system (who, in turn, will be channeling their respective substantial infrastructure investments), accountability will be vastly enhanced, resulting in better service reliability and resilience, and addressing long-standing challenges in Iloilo City’s water supply and distribution.

As the project proceeds to a Swiss Challenge, the Iloilo City Government will eventually select the most competitive private partner equipped with the appropriate financial and technical expertise. By doing so, a more competitive economic environment will be created, putting a premium on innovation, efficiency, and better service delivery for all Ilonggos.

Iloilo’s Growing Economy: Driving the Demand For Water Resilience & Security

The timing of the Iloilo Bulk Water Supply Project aligns with Iloilo City’s impressive economic trajectory at present.

In 2023, the city’s Gross Domestic Product grew by 10.5%, reaching ₱160.28 billion, making it the fastest-growing economy in Western Visayas and the second-fastest among all Highly Urbanized Cities in the Philippines.

This robust economic performance underscores Iloilo City’s increasing demand for reliable infrastructure, including water supply and distribution systems, to support an expanding urban landscape and an array of vital economic activities.

The Iloilo Bulk Water Supply Project stands as AIC’s testament to the city’s commitment to sustainable development, economic resilience, and the well-being of its residents.

As the project proceeds, AIC will continue to collaborate with the Iloilo City Government to ensure the project delivers meaningful impact, remains fair and reasonable for consumers, and brings lasting benefits to the entire Iloilo community.
