The Iloilo City Council has approved three resolutions to address the half-day class schedule now being implemented in several public schools in the city.
The measures, filed by City Councilor Sedfrey cabaluna, focus on infrastructure and learning continuity.
The first resolution urges the Department of Public Works and Highways, the Office of the Building Official, the Department of Education, and other concerned agencies to immediately conduct structural assessments, repairs, and rehabilitation of public school buildings damaged by the September 30, 2025 Cebu earthquake.
The second resolution asks the Department of Education to implement interventions to address learning gaps caused by double-shift classes due to limited classrooms.
The third resolution directs the City Council’s Committee on Education and Committee on Engineering to jointly look into the structural and educational challenges in public schools and recommend solutions to the council.
Councilor Cabaluna, in a privilege speech, said half-day classes are now in effect at Iloilo National High School and Iloilo City National High School, where some buildings remain unusable after the earthquake. Other public schools have also adopted similar measures due to classroom shortages.
The council approved the resolutions unanimously, showing its commitment to safe school facilities and uninterrupted learning for students in Iloilo City.IMT
