The Iloilo City Council has unanimously approved a resolution urging Mayor Raisa Treñas to erect a monument honoring the late Ilongga senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago.

Councilor Rex Marcus Sarabia sponsored the measure during the council’s regular session on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, describing it as a “people-initiated resolution” to formally recognize Santiago’s enduring legacy.

The resolution cited Santiago’s reputation as the “Iron Lady of Asia,” who earned national and international acclaim for her brilliance, courage, and integrity. It highlighted her distinguished career across all three branches of government—serving as a regional trial court judge, commissioner of immigration and deportation, and senator.

Santiago also made history as the first Filipino and Asian from a developing country to be elected as judge of the International Criminal Court.

“Her unwavering dedication to good governance, rule of law, education and public accountability continues to inspire generations of Filipinos, particularly the youth who remember her sharp wit, wisdom, and unmatched courage,” the resolution stated.

The council further underscored that Santiago’s life and achievements remain a source of pride for Iloilo, especially for residents of La Paz district, where she spent her formative years.

Sarabia added that at a time when controversies hound national flood control projects, Santiago’s legacy serves as a reminder for leaders to fight corruption and stand for what is right.IMT
