The province of Iloilo is making waves as a renewable energy leader, hosting the 8th Renewable Energy Congress and Exhibit from December 11 to 12, 2025 at the Iloilo Convention Center.
The event, held in partnership with the Center for Empowerment, Innovation, and Training on Renewable Energy (CentRE), the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities, and Central Philippine University, drew more than 200 leaders, policymakers, industry experts, and youth advocates to discuss the future of clean, sustainable energy.
Among the distinguished guests were Department of Energy Secretary Sharon Garin, Belgian Ambassador Vladislava Iordanova, UK Economic and Climate Counsellor Lloyd Cameron, ICSC Executive Director Kairos Dela Cruz, Engr. Erel Narida of the Renewable Energy Association of the Philippines, and Iloilo Fourth District Board Member Rolando Distura, vice chairperson of the Provincial Board Committee on Environment and Natural Resources.
Provincial Administrator Raul Banias delivered the welcome message on behalf of Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., highlighting Iloilo’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and energy sufficiency.
A major highlight of the congress was the launch of the Iloilo Declaration for 5R 4 JET — emphasizing Renewable, Resilience, Reliability, Resource Efficiency, and Responsibility in pursuit of a Just Energy Transition. The declaration aims to fast-track renewable energy adoption while balancing environmental, economic, and social considerations.
Iloilo’s leadership in clean energy is already recognized nationally. The province is a pioneer awardee of the Department of Energy’s Sustainable Energy Awards under the Local Government Unit category and a recipient of the Energy Champion Award from the DOE Visayas Field Office, reflecting its successful implementation of renewable energy projects.
“The 8th Renewable Energy Congress is not just a gathering; it is a call to action,” Banias said. “Iloilo is proving that a sustainable, resilient, and renewable future is possible when government, industry, and communities work hand in hand.”
The congress also served as a platform for networking, knowledge-sharing, and showcasing innovative renewable energy solutions — from solar microgrids and wind energy to energy-efficient systems — inspiring LGUs and stakeholders across the Visayas to embrace clean energy pathways.
As Iloilo continues to lead by example, the province cements its role not just as a hub of culture and commerce, but as a beacon for renewable energy transformation in the Philippines.IMT
