Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada expressed full support for the reform initiatives of newly appointed Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III, calling them necessary and long overdue.

“Mahalagang-mahalaga na may tiwala ang publiko sa kapulisan,” said Estrada. “Kapag nakikita nilang may integridad at propesyonalismo ang mga pulis, mas magiging bukas ang mga tao na makipagtulungan sa paglaban sa krimen at sa pagpapanatili ng kaayusan sa ating mga komunidad.”

The chair of the Senate Committee on National Defense and Security praised Torre’s early actions, including the dismissal of officers who failed to meet his five-minute response time target, saying these demonstrate a clear understanding of the reforms needed in the PNP.

“Leadership is not about grandstanding – it’s about knowing where to take the institution and having the courage to make tough calls,” said Estrada.

He also welcomed the implementation of eight-hour shifts for police officers, noting that it could enhance their focus, well-being, and overall performance.

Estrada acknowledged that change takes time but stressed the need for accountability, tech upgrades, and morale-boosting reforms, balanced with fair treatment for officers who serve with integrity.IMT
