Senator JV Ejercito has raised alarm over growing mental health problems among business process outsourcing (BPO) workers, citing the sector’s highly stressful and demanding work environment.

During a Senate labor committee hearing, Ejercito said mental health has become a “clear and present danger” for many BPO employees, urging government agencies and employers to give the issue priority.

He reminded stakeholders that mental health services are covered under the Universal Health Care Law, including free consultations and PhilHealth-covered maintenance medicines, but noted that many workers may be unaware of available programs.

Industry representatives also flagged the impact of night shifts, stressful workloads, and lifestyle factors on workers’ well-being, calling for stronger workplace mental health support.

Ejercito also asked about mental health and wellness leaves, which the Department of Labor and Employment confirmed are allowed and encouraged, especially in high-pressure jobs.

The lawmaker stressed that mental health protection is both a workplace and public health concern, noting that he pushed for over P742 million in funding for mental health programs under the proposed 2026 national budget.IMT
