Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan voiced strong support for Philippine Animal Welfare Society’s (PAWS) push to further strengthen the Animal Welfare Act and impose stricter penalties on animal abusers.

In a Feb. 11 meeting with PAWS, Pangilinan said he will file a bill to enhance enforcement of the law.

“The way we treat animals reflects our values as a society. We must ensure that our laws evolve to address ongoing and new forms of cruelty, strengthen accountability, and promote responsible pet ownership and animal stewardship,” according to the senator.

He also vowed to work closely with the group, citing their long partnership, including amendments to Republic Act No. (RA) 8485 during the 15th Congress that increased fines and jail terms under RA 10631.

PAWS executive director Atty. Anna Cabrera expressed confidence in Pangilinan’s backing and proposed the creation of a National Commission on Animal Welfare with quasi-judicial powers under the group’s ALAGA bill, which also seeks tougher penalties for abuse and neglect.IMT
