Senator Francis Pangilinan has lauded the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for its quick action against a mining company linked to alleged illegal iron ore extraction in Jose Panganiban, Camarines Norte.

Pangilinan sought clarification from the DENR after reports that Yinlu Bicol Minerals Corp. conducted mining activities outside areas allowed by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau.

In response, the DENR issued a show cause order on Dec. 19, directing Yinlu’s owner Robert Melchior Durante II and its operator, Norteeste Corp., to stop open-pit operations and explain within 72 hours why their permits should not be revoked.

Pangilinan said the DENR’s firm stance shows government commitment to protecting the environment, stressing that illegal mining endangers ecosystems, livelihoods, and public safety through erosion, pollution, flooding, and landslides.

He urged continued enforcement of environmental laws and called on local governments and communities to help report illegal activities and protect natural resources.

DENR records show Norteeste Corp. is authorized to export 55,000 WMT of raw iron ore to a China-based firm, with a gross estimated value of nearly US$1.93 million or about P114 million.IMT
