Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan urged the youth to use their influence on social media to make agrarian reform and agricultural issues “viral,” saying this could spark long-overdue change in a sector oppressed for centuries.
Speaking at an open forum at Ateneo de Manila University on October 14, Pangilinan said young people, being the most tech-savvy generation, have the power to challenge disinformation and push for reform.
“Use your voice – social media. Support causes that you believe should be supported. Fight disinformation kasi laganap pa rin ang disimpormasyon hanggang ngayon,” he said.
“Kayong mga kabataan, you are the most social media savvy. Kayo ang pinaka-digital natives, ika nga. Gamitin ninyo ang kapangyarihan niyo.”
The senator said viral movements can pressure leaders to act and demand accountability amid corruption and neglect in agriculture.
Pangilinan explained that lack of government support has made farmers and fisherfolk among the poorest in the country.
He called on the youth to take part in nation-building and stand against social, economic, and political injustice.
“‘Pag ang kabataan at estudyante ang tumaya, kumilos, nakibahagi, nanindigan, sumusunod na ang socio-political upheaval. Kayo yun,” according to him.
“Now is the time to speak up. Now is the time to make a stand. Now is the time to say enough is enough. Now is the time to reclaim our governance and our politics in this country.”IMT
