The Iloilo City Government has unveiled the newly illuminated La Paz Football Ground, marking a significant milestone as the first plaza-based football field in Western Visayas to meet international lighting standards.

The P17.3-million project was completed in partnership with Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGEN), through its thermal subsidiary Panay Energy Development Corporation (PEDC), and with the support of the One Meralco Foundation (OMF).

The upgraded lighting system allows the plaza to host night games, training sessions, and community events, turning the historic La Paz plaza into a vibrant, well-lit venue for sports and recreation.

Mayor Raisa Treñas described the project as a symbol of progress and collaboration, noting that it embodies Iloilo City’s vision of transforming public spaces into centers of life and community.

She said the lighting system will enable more Ilonggos, including families, students, and athletes alike, to use the football ground even after sundown, fostering camaraderie, discipline, and teamwork.

“This ground lighting project is more than just the 40 powerful lights imported. Making it the first of its kind here in Panay Island, it is a glowing symbol of what collaboration and shared dreams can achieve,” the mayor emphasized.

The new facility complements ongoing programs such as the Iloilo City Sports Academy (ICSA) and the Sports Kickstarter Program, which offer free training and development opportunities for young athletes.

With extended playing hours and improved visibility, Ilonggo football players can now train, compete, and sharpen their skills under professional-grade lighting.

For MGEN and PEDC, the project reflects a continuing commitment to Iloilo’s growth and well-being. It is noted that the companies have long supported community initiatives, including the annual Christmas decorations at La Paz Plaza, which have become a cherished local tradition.

Through this initiative, the city government and its private partners aim to further strengthen Iloilo’s reputation as a hub for community sports, youth development, and inclusive urban progress. AAL/JNH/PIA Iloilo
