Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo “Ping” Lacson has warned that a proposed debate questioning Philippine ownership of the Kalayaan Island Group (KIG) could harm Filipinos already living there, particularly residents of Pag-asa Island.
Lacson appealed to retired Justice Antonio Carpio and UP professor Atty. Jay Batongbacal to avoid what he called a “pointless” debate that could put the basic right of abode of KIG residents into question.
He stressed that KIG belongs to the Philippines under the legal principle of res nullius, citing the discovery and occupation of the Spratly Islands by Tomas Cloma, who later turned over ownership to the Philippine government.
The senator also noted that Filipino families continue to live in the area, which he visited in 2021.
Lacson also lamented the heated Senate debates on the West Philippine Sea, saying it was painful to see lawmakers argue over issues of territorial integrity.
On Monday, the Senate adopted Resolution 256 condemning hostile statements by Chinese diplomats, following nearly three hours of intense debate that forced the suspension of the session twice.IMT
