President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has signed Republic Act No. 12305, or the Philippine National Nuclear Energy Safety Act, establishing the Philippine Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (PhilATOM) to oversee the safe and peaceful use of nuclear energy in the country.

PhilATOM, a quasi-judicial body, will regulate nuclear activities, issue licenses, and enforce safeguards on the handling, transport, and disposal of radioactive materials.

It will also coordinate with the NDRRMC on nuclear emergency preparedness and ensure compliance with international commitments, including those with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The law imposes strict prohibitions against unauthorized nuclear activities and sets heavy penalties, up to P100 million in fines and imprisonment, for violations and unsafe practices.

Malacañang said the measure underscores the government’s push to use nuclear science and technology for national development while ensuring safety, security, and accountability.IMT
