A walk through of areas in Iloilo City experiencing flooding every time it rains will hopefully determine what is causing the problem, especially as the start of the rainy season nears.
This was agreed upon in a meeting called by Mayor Jerry Treñas with the City Engineer’s Office (CEO), Office of the Building Official, General Services Office (GSO), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), and the Iloilo City District Engineering Office to discuss the concern, according to Joel Gerasmia, chief of staff of the CEO.
In an interview, Gerasmia said the inspection would start at the La Paz plaza going to Huervana Street, followed by Gen. Luna-Mabini Street and Jalandoni streets on Thursday.
During the walk through, they will open the drainage to determine why a flood occurs even with the huge drainage installed by the DPWH.
The areas of concern include Jaro, Mandurriao, La Paz, and City Proper.
“We will see and determine the problem,” he said.
During the meeting, DPWH committed to providing a bigger inlet to accommodate the deluge of rainwater.
Gerasmia said the DPWH also has ongoing drainage projects along La Paz and City Proper, which, when connected to the pumping stations, would help address the flooding.
Meanwhile, he said the GSO will help clean the clogged inlets, which could be one of the causes of flooding.PNA
