President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. honored former senator Manny Pacquiao as a boxing legend and “champion of the Filipino spirit” during the turnover of his memorabilia to the National Sports Museum in Pasig City.
Marcos Jr. said Pacquiao united the nation and brought global pride through his victories, calling him not just a boxing champion but “a champion of humanity” and of Filipinos worldwide.
He recalled how communities, even conflict areas in Mindanao, would pause to watch his fights.
“Saan ka naman nakakita ng atletang Pilipino na pagka may laban, ‘yung putukan sa Mindanao nagsi-ceasefire muna para manood sila kay Manny Pacquiao? Where did you ever hear of such a thing?” the President said.
The President also praised Pacquiao’s humility, faith, and generosity, noting how he quietly helped fellow boxers facing illness and financial hardship.
Pacquiao, the only eight-division world champion in boxing history, turned over key memorabilia, including fight trunks from his 2009 Miguel Cotto and 2010 Antonio Margarito bouts, and his WBC championship belt.
He is set for two fights this year, including a September rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in Las Vegas.IMT Sports
