President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to work with global partners in tackling plastic pollution through modern technologies during his keynote at the IAEA High-Level Forum on NUTEC Plastics in Pasay City.

He stressed that plastic waste is now a global threat impacting biodiversity, public health, and coastal communities.

Marcos Jr. highlighted the country’s support for the NUTEC Plastics initiative, citing innovations like DOST-PNRI’s PREx project, which turns low-value plastic waste into durable construction materials, including a prototype house.

The President also noted the marine microplastics monitoring lab at UP Marine Science Institute, built with IAEA support, which provides data to guide global and national policy.

He announced the launch of the NUTEC Plastics Investment and Partnership Brochure and emphasized the country’s long-term commitment to science-driven solutions, including the passage of the Philippine Nuclear Law.

As incoming ASEAN Chair in 2026, the Philippines will expand nuclear science cooperation through ASEANTOM, with Marcos Jr. calling NUTEC Plastics a model for regional collaboration.IMT
