President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has urged parents and teachers to instill healthy eating habits in children to help prevent serious illnesses later in life, including chronic kidney disease.

Speaking at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) in Quezon City on June 19, Marcos Jr. also appealed to the food industry to reduce sugar in meals, especially in fast food.

“Kailangan natin ng tulong ng magulang, ng mga teacher, maging na ang mga nasa industriya na ‘yung mga naghahanda ng fast food eh bawasan naman nila ‘yung paglagay ng asukal para naman ay ‘yung kabataan natin ay hindi mapunta sa ganitong kondisyon,” he said.

The President stressed that teaching nutritious eating early is key to lowering cases of lifestyle-related diseases in the long run.

Marcos Jr. visited NKTI to launch PhilHealth’s new benefit package for post-kidney transplant patients. He also toured the hospital’s Hemodialysis Center and met with transplant recipients.

Under his directive, PhilHealth has expanded its coverage for members diagnosed with end-stage chronic kidney disease.IMT
