President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. welcomed the Philippines’ improved standing in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to safeguarding journalists and upholding press freedom.
The country rose 18 spots—from 134th in 2024 to 116th out of 180 nations—its best ranking in 21 years. Reporters Without Borders (RSF), which releases the annual index, cited improvements in media safety and legal protections.
“Yes, definitely, that’s (the 2025 RSF World Press Freedom Index) good news. The President is delighted with the latest ranking of the Philippines in relation to its upholding of press freedom,” Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said on Monday, May 5.
“It shows that the President respects one’s rights of expression and responsible journalism. This particular achievement of the Philippines also shows that the President is not gearing towards dictatorship… There is definitely press freedom in the country,” added Castro.
She also quoted Marcos Jr., saying, “We assured that we are doubling down on our commitment to protect our journalists and to uphold press freedom. We stand with you hand in hand in this fight.”
The World Press Freedom Index evaluates press freedom in 180 countries and territories each year based on the freedoms enjoyed by journalists.IMT
