Authorities are preparing to file criminal charges against a 54-year-old male passenger who allegedly threatened security officers with a knife at the Iloilo International Airport in Cabatuan, Iloilo. The incident raised serious security concerns, prompting law enforcement’s swift response.

According to Police Col. Bayani Razalan, Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) director, the charges will depend on the findings of the investigation and may include attempted homicide, direct assault, grave threat, and resisting arrest.

The IPPO is working closely with the Philippine National Police (PNP) Aviation Security Group (AVSEGROUP) to ensure that the legal case is properly filed.

Police said the incident happened during a secondary inspection after security personnel found a knife in the passenger’s bag.

The man — who was scheduled to fly to Cebu between 6:40 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 28 —reportedly took the bag and went amok before he was subdued.

Razalan said the suspect has not cooperated with police and has not given a reason for carrying the knife.

Police are also verifying the suspect’s background. His identification listed Camiguin as his place of origin, but his family said he is from Cebu.

Authorities are coordinating with Cebu police for further information.

To reassure the public, it is important to note that aviation safety protocols, including knife-detection procedures, are rigorously enforced at all times.

Such incidents are rare, and security measures are designed to effectively manage and promptly address any threats. This maintains high standards of safety and operational integrity in airports.

The suspect is in stable condition at a hospital in Iloilo City. He sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.IMT
