The town of Oton continues to record the highest number of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) cases in Iloilo, according to the latest data from the Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO).
Dr. Wendel Marcelo of the IPHO reported that from 2005 to 2025, the province logged a total of 2,273 HIV cases. Of this number, 210 cases were recorded between January 1 and June 30 of this year alone.
Following Oton in the Top 10 municipalities with the most recorded HIV cases are Pavia, Pototan, Janiuay, Sta. Barbara, Barotac Nuevo, Dumangas, Cabatuan, Lambunao, and Miagao.
Marcelo said that sexual intercourse between men remains the leading cause of new infections, reflecting a persistent trend observed in previous years.
The IPHO urged the public not to hesitate or feel ashamed to seek medical consultation if they suspect possible HIV infection.
Early testing and treatment, according to the provincial office, remain key to preventing the spread of the virus and maintaining quality of life for those infected.
“Awareness and early detection save lives. We encourage everyone to take the test and seek help without fear or stigma,” Marcelo emphasized.IMT
