Boxing legend and People’s Champ Manny Pacquiao has expressed gratitude to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for his “all-out” support for the upcoming 50th anniversary of the historic “Thrilla in Manila” this October.
Pacquiao paid a courtesy call on the President in Malacañang on Thursday, Aug. 28, and said Marcos Jr.’s strong backing will play a big role in the success of the week-long celebration.
The commemoration will honor the legendary 1975 bout between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier at the Araneta Coliseum and aims to promote Filipino pride and talent in boxing.
“Napakalaking tulong nito at salamat sa suporta ng ating Pangulo. Napakalaking tulong ng ating Pangulo sa pakikipagtulungan ng mga ahensya ng ating gobyerno,” said Pacquiao. “Gagawin natin ito para maging successful ‘yung celebration ng 50th Anniversary ng Thrilla in Manila,” he added.
The former senator added that the event may include world title fights. “Natuwa naman si Presidente. All-out support naman siya. Maraming salamat,” he said.
Asked if Marcos Jr. would attend, Pacquiao confirmed the Chief Executive’s interest.
“Manonood siya. Interesadong-interesado siya sa concept na ‘yun,” he said.IMT
