A power bank exploded at Roxas Airport in Capiz on Tuesday morning, June 24, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).
The minor explosion took place at the Initial Security Screening Checkpoint (ISSCP) of the airport around 6:36 a.m.
“An airport security guard promptly responded and used a fire extinguisher to suppress the flames. Despite this intervention, the power bank exploded shortly after,” said CAAP chief information officer Eric Apolonio.
“Fortunately, the incident did not result in any injuries or significant damage,” he added.
The 72,000 milliampere-hour (mAh) power bank was detected inside the baggage of a female passenger bound for Manila.
Apolonio said the device exceeded the allowable capacity of 160 watt-hours for devices permitted on aircraft.
He urged passengers to stricty comply with aviation safety regulations, particularly regarding lithium-ion-powered devices such as power banks.IMT
