As homes across Western Visayas gear up to sparkle this holiday season, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI-6) is turning up the heat on safety, urging consumers to ensure their Christmas lights and fireworks are properly certified.

DTI-6 officials reminded the public that only products bearing the Philippine Standard (PS) mark for local goods or the Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) sticker for imported items should be used.

Grace M. Benedicto, DTI-6 Consumer Protection Division chief, said the agency has intensified monitoring at 46 outlets in the region to enforce compliance.

“Safety is non-negotiable,” she stressed “Christmas lights may bring joy, but they can also be electrical hazards if untested or uncertified. Always check the markings, and when in doubt, don’t buy.”

Benedicto explained that the PS mark features a globe symbol, while the ICC sticker has a hologram with a scannable QR code for easy verification.

DTI-6 Assistant Regional Director Mutya Eusores emphasized that responsible purchasing is the first line of defense for households.

“By choosing certified lights, we prevent accidents and protect our families while enjoying the season,” she said.

Consumers are also encouraged to report outlets selling uncertified products, as DTI continues to push for safe, hazard-free holiday celebrations.

With millions of Filipinos decorating their homes, the agency aims to ensure that the season’s sparkle comes without hidden risks.IMT
