The Senate Minority bloc has filed Senate Resolution No. 307 urging protection for Filipinos against “extraordinary rendition” and ensuring they can seek legal remedies in Philippine courts before any surrender to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
“It is the sense of the Senate… to protect all Filipinos against extraordinary rendition and guarantee them a reasonable time… to seek redress from the courts,” the resolution read.
The move follows debates over former President Rodrigo Duterte’s surrender to the ICC, which the bloc said undermined due process and national sovereignty under Republic Act No. 9851.
It also cited reports naming incumbent Senators Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa Ang Christopher “Bong” Go as “co-perpetrators” in an ICC document.
“Due process and the rule of law should not be sacrificed at the altar of a blind pursuit of justice,” the resolution stressed.
Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano said the Constitution is clear and that Filipinos facing accusations have the right to seek relief before local courts prior to any international action.IMT
