A 120-megawatt (MW) solar power facility is set to potentially transform the energy landscape of northern Iloilo, following discussions between MGEN Renewable Energy, Inc. and provincial officials.

The proposed project, to be built in Barangays Nipa and Lo-ong in Concepcion, will occupy 135.40 hectares and be connected to the NGCP Concepcion 138-kV substation, allowing power generated to feed directly into the national grid.

Beyond bolstering Iloilo’s renewable energy capacity, the facility is expected to contribute over a million pesos in taxes, injecting a significant economic boost into Concepcion and surrounding communities.

Representatives from MGEN Renewables, including Janjan Ian Gustilo and Santos Barril Jr., met with Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. to discuss the project, alongside officials from the provincial government and the energy sector.

Solar boom: 120-MW power plant pitched for northern Iloilo

Present at the meeting were Via Ayson of Green Dev Solutions, Provincial Administrator Raul Banias, PGENRO chief Atty. Cesar Emmanuelle Buyco, Jr., and PGENRO Energy Efficiency and Conservation Desk head Rey Garin.

MGEN Renewables, the clean-energy arm of Meralco Power Corporation (MGEN) under the Manila Electric Company (Meralco), aims to expand its footprint in the Visayas, aligning with the national drive toward sustainable and climate-resilient energy infrastructure.

Defensor welcomed the initiative, highlighting its potential to strengthen local power supply, create jobs, and reinforce Iloilo’s position as a leader in renewable energy adoption in the region.

If realized, the Concepcion solar facility will mark one of the largest renewable-energy investments in northern Iloilo, reinforcing both economic growth and environmental sustainability.IMT
