The unpredictable rise and fall of construction material prices, particularly steel, has been blamed for the cost adjustments in the Katilingban waiting shed project, according to City Engineer Roberto Señoron.

Señoron said around ₱95,000 of the ₱200,000 total variation in project cost stemmed from the roofing and steel materials used for the structure.

The steel, sourced from China, tends to become more expensive during the summer season when many construction projects are ongoing, he explained.

From the initial ₱800,000 total project cost, the Katilingban waiting shed was reevaluated to ₱586,000, reflecting the changes brought by material price fluctuations and cost rationalization.

Despite the variations, Señoron assured the public that any savings from the cost adjustments will be returned to the city government’s coffers.

He emphasized that such price variations are normal in public works projects, especially when global market conditions affect imported materials like steel.IMT
