Iloilo City Mayor Raisa Treñas has expressed strong support for the appointment of Vince Dizon as the new Secretary of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), while urging a review of existing protocols to improve coordination between district engineers and local governments.
“Secretary Dizon’s track record in government—from his leadership at the Bases Conversion and Development Authority to his decisive role as COVID-19 testing czar and as Transportation Secretary—reflects bold, innovative, and integrity-driven leadership,” Treñas said.
“His appointment signals a new chapter of accountability and excellence in public works,” the mayor added.
Dizon replaced Manuel Bonoan, who stepped down on Monday, Sept. 1, to take responsibility over alleged irregularities in flood-control projects.
For Iloilo City, Treñas stressed, this transition presents an opportunity to ensure that DPWH projects are guided by transparency, responsiveness, and science-based planning.
The mayor emphasized that infrastructure must safeguard lives, protect property, and support sustainable development.
At the same time, Treñas respectfully urged Secretary Dizon to review and reform the existing protocols of district engineers.
“Making them more collaborative will strengthen our partnership with DPWH, ensure faster coordination, prevent delays, and guarantee that every peso of public funds benefits the Ilonggo people,” she said.
The mayor is optimistic that under Dizon’s leadership, Iloilo City can work hand-in-hand with DPWH to deliver infrastructure that is not only inclusive and future-ready but also genuinely responsive to the needs of the people.IMT
