Iloilo City Mayor Raisa Treñas has distanced herself from Uswag Ilonggo Party-list following revelations made by contractors Curlee and Sarah Discaya during a Senate hearing.

The controversial couple claimed that the party-list’s representative, Jojo Ang, was among those who received kickbacks from flood control projects.

In a statement Treñas admitted that in 2022, she was selected as the second nominee of Uswag Ilonggo, which was formed by her father, former mayor Jerry Trenas, and other Ilonggo leaders.

“I was once listed as a second nominee of Uswag Ilonggo in 2022. In early 2024, I joined the National Unity Party (NUP), and I ran under NUP for my 2025 mayoral candidacy,” she said.

“Congressman Jojo Ang has denied the accusations and will defend himself in due time,” the mayor added.

Treñas also expressed her support for the creation of an independent commission to investigate the anomalies in flood control projects implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

In a separate statement, Ang “strongly and categorically denied”  the “baseless accusations” made by the Discayas.

“I am totally surprised that my name has been mentioned. It is unfortunate that some interested parties have chosen to resort name-dragging for their personal agenda,” he said.

“It is a convenient distraction from the real issues. I urge the public to be circumspect and to remain focused on the facts.” Ang added.IMT
