Mayor Raisa Treñas has ordered the reactivation of the Iloilo City Government’s Task Force Badjao to address public safety concerns following reports of harassment and theft allegedly involving individuals claiming to be “Badjao” in the downtown area and near schools.
The local chief executive said the move is part of intensified operations ahead of the holiday season, noting that such incidents historically increase as Christmas approaches.
“We have expanded our monitoring and enforcement early to ensure public safety,” Treñas added.
The action plan includes deploying City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) staff in coordination with barangay councils of Tagbak, Ungka, and Baldoza, as well as in major transport hubs such as Mohon Terminal and Parola Wharf.
Assistance desks have been installed to monitor and respond immediately when suspected groups disembark from buses.
Treñas acknowledged the alarm and frustration of residents, assuring that the city will not tolerate harassment, theft, or any form of abuse targeting the public, especially children.
She is also working closely with the Iloilo City Police Office and the Public Order and Safety Management Office for stronger presence and faster response to complaints.
The mayor stressed that while there are legal and humanitarian aspects to addressing the issue, public spaces, food establishments, and schools must remain safe for both residents and visitors.
“Iloilo City must remain safe for everyone—whether you live here or are just visiting,” Treñas said.IMT
