The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH-6) found no major damage to the Ungka flyover in Iloilo after two strong earthquakes were felt across the province and city.

The flyover, which connects Iloilo City and the town of Pavia, was inspected by the agency and deemed safe for use following the magnitude 6.9 and 7.4  quakes that hit Cebu on Sept. 30 and Davao Oriental on Oct. 10, respectively.

DPWH-6 OIC Regional Director Engr. Jose Al Fruto said technical teams were deployed to conduct a Rapid Visual Assessment (RVA) of the flyovers using a Bridge Inspection Vehicle to check for cracks or structural movement.

“RVA is a standard procedure after significant seismic activity to determine if public infrastructures remain safe for use,” he explained.

Aside from the flyovers in Ungka and Aganan, Fruto said the agency also plans to inspect heritage churches and other old structures that attract large crowds.

The initial assessment showed no visible or critical damage to the Ungka flyover, which remains open to four-wheeled and light vehicles.

DPWH engineers are continuing routine monitoring to watch for possible effects of aftershocks.

Fruto said the agency would recommend temporary closure of any structure if later inspections detect serious safety risks.

The Ungka flyover has been under monitoring since its partial closure in 2022 following reports of vertical displacement shortly after it opened to traffic.IMT
