Senator Win Gatchalian has filed a resolution calling for a Senate inquiry into the growing involvement of students in online gambling.
Gatchalian raised concern over the ease with which minors can access gambling platforms, often without adult supervision.
“Dahil nakatutok ang mga kabataan sa cellphone o computer, mas madali silang mahikayat ng online gambling advertisements na nasa websites at social media channels tulad ng Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, at YouTube,” according to him.
“They just provide their basic information, and they can already access multiple promos and cash-in options,” he said.
He warned that despite laws prohibiting those under 21—and all students—from gambling, enforcement remains weak, especially in the digital space.
Gatchalian pointed to a lack of national policy or school-based programs specifically targeting gambling prevention.
He also emphasized that the rise of e-wallets has made gambling more accessible to minors, with platforms offering minimal age verification, instant rewards, and addictive mechanics.
The World Health Organization classifies gambling disorder as a behavioral addiction, linked to school absenteeism, theft, mental health issues, and long-term dependency.
The proposed inquiry aims to assess the extent of the problem and craft effective safeguards to protect Filipino youth.IMT
