5-year term for barangay, SK officials gets Senate nod

The Senate has approved on third and final reading a bill extending the term of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials from four years to five years.

Senate Bill No. 2387 was approved Monday, Sept. 14, with 13 affirmative votes and five negative votes.

The measure also moves the Barangay and SK Elections from the first Monday to the second Monday of November every five years beginning in 2028.

Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero, principal author and sponsor of the bill, said barangay and SK officials need more time to implement projects and complete long-term programs.

He noted that barangay officials perform several roles, including serving as community planners, peacekeepers, first responders, and frontline service providers.

Escudero said a five-year term would provide continuity in governance while keeping regular elections to ensure accountability.

The proposed change in the election date is also intended to avoid the heavy travel and public service demands during the observance of All Saints’ Day.IMT
