A legislative measure designating Santa Barbara as the official capital town of Iloilo province is expected to secure congressional approval by late this year or in 2027, according to Second District Representative Dr. Kathryn Joyce Gorriceta.
Backed by Governor Arthur “Toto” Defensor Jr., the proposed bill awaits national approval before the Sangguniang Panlalawigan passes a corresponding ordinance.
Meanwhile, Sta. Barbara Mayor Dr. Dennis Superficial welcomed the proposal, emphasizing its significance to the town’s historical and administrative standing.
Famed for the 1898 “Cry of Santa Barbara”—which established the Revolutionary Government of the Western Visayas under Roque Lopez and General Martin Delgado—the town marks the site where the Philippine flag was first raised outside Luzon, earning its moniker as the region’s “Seat of Freedom.”
Beyond its historical legacy, Santa Barbara currently houses key provincial government offices and serves as a central transit hub, situated near major highways, circumferential routes, and the Iloilo International Airport.IMT
