Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero wants a nationwide ban on gambling advertisements and celebrity endorsements to help prevent gambling addiction, especially among young Filipinos.
Escudero filed Senate Bill No. 2347, saying gambling promotions have become too common on television, radio, social media, and other platforms.
“It’s about time that we regulate the gambling industry the same way we regulated tobacco two decades ago,” Escudero said.
The proposed measure would prohibit gambling ads in print, broadcast, online, and outdoor media. It would also ban celebrities and social media influencers from promoting gambling brands.
Escudero said the bill aims to protect minors and vulnerable sectors while reminding the public about the dangers of compulsive gambling. Although the gambling industry generates billions in revenue, he said public welfare should come first.
If approved, violators could face fines, jail terms, and even the cancellation of their business permits or licenses. The bill also requires government agencies to launch information campaigns on responsible gambling and available mental health support.IMT
