The Department of Education (DepEd -6) welcomed over 745,000 learners across Western Visayas as classes for school year 2026-2027 officially began on Monday, June 8.
In a statement, DepEd-6 Regional Director Cristito Eco III said they are committed to ensuring the smooth and effective rollout of the three-term school calendar.
“This structure is designed to provide a balanced distribution of learning time, allowing learners to better attain the required competencies while also considering their well-being. Through careful planning and coordinated efforts, we aim to maximize instructional time and improve learning outcomes throughout the school year,” he said.
DepEd-6 information officer Hernani Escullar Jr., in a separate interview, said each term has sub-blocks.
Unique for Term 1, he said, is the opening block where all assessments are being conducted for baseline data.
“The instructional block is June 15 to Sept. 1. As the term suggests, it is intended for school instruction. Activities are minimal, so they are focused on instructional materials,” he said.
Next is the end-of-term block from Sept. 2-15. This period caters to extra-curricular activities, in-service training and release of report cards, among others.
The second term will begin on Sept.16, while the third term will start on Jan. 4, 2027.
Escullar said they expect the number of enrollees to increase as the encoding in the enrollment quick count is still ongoing.IMT
